WANTED: Statement Collars

This season I can’t get enough of the statement collar; bringing a playful fashion edge to the otherwise straightlaced styles of button up shirts and good-girl shift dresses. In leather, print, fur, embellishment and sparkle; simply take your pick.
Where better to start than with a piece from the man with the most recognizable collars in fashion today. To accessorize any outfit this autumn, simply add this be-jewelled collar from Mr. Lagerfeld’s very own label, KARL.

For a more subtle, graphic look this loose fit, tunic dress from Stella McCartney is spot on. In the vibrant cobalt blue shade of the season, the contrasting neckline is a sweet directional detail.

My personal favourite has to be this silk blouse from Preen. With a simple concealed back fastening, the clean lines accentuate the vibrant collar and cuffs. After all, if you’re going to do a statement collar, you might as well go all out in floral-and-insect print and bright orange!

The saccharine edge is taken off this super sweet powder blue sweater by the contrasting embellished collar. In an on-trend retro style, this piece from Miu Miu is a winner for winter in my eyes.

But since Autumn/Winter comprises the festive season, a round up of the trend would hardly be complete without a party frock to dazzle in. Look no further than this frostily pale, panelled dress from Philosophy Di Alberta Ferretti.

The studded collar makes this classic little white dress into one of the season’s standouts. Pair with complimentary ice-toned accessories and dazzle away!

Retro Revival

After the summer’s heavily fifties inspired fashions, it seems that it is now time to move forward a decade and pay homage to the swinging sixties. Shift dresses, retro prints and just a hint of psychedelia are at the forefront of this autumn trend.
Jonathan Saunders’ jewel tone collection, below, embodies an up to date twist on sixties chic. With retro prints and peter pan collars, these are timeless pieces with a healthy dose of fashion nostalgia. 

Work the look into your winter wardrobe with this bold print shirt from Miu Miu. A psychedelic floral pattern to contend with!

To add a modern edge to the look, wear over your best skinnies and brogues, or to give full power to the period style, pair with a clashing print skirt from Jonathan Saunders.

Top of my personal wishlist is this boxy print top from Missoni. The nostalgic colour scheme will work perfectly with all the prettiest of the seasons’ nude accessories.

But for the most authentic styling, the ideal partner has to be these cropped trousers by Miu Miu. Although the turquoise tailoring will work equally well with a semi-sheer blouse and patent stilettos.

If you aren’t ready to go the whole hog quite yet, then channel the trend with this retro-chic mini satchel from Chloe. A polished take on 60s style patchwork that will carry you through day and evening in true groovy style!

Belt Up

The hourglass silhouette is currently foremost in the fashion mindset and, with the fit-and-flare trend going nowhere, it seems set to continue. What better way to embrace the trend than to accessorize with a waist cinching belt? Whether worn over loose knits, tailored dresses or winter coats the designers bring us a plethora of statement waisted belts with which to create the season’s most desirable silhouette and add a wonderfully decorative finishing touch.

Create a ladylike silhouette as seen on the catwalk of the Dior A/W 12 collection, above, with this waist cincher from Oscar de la Renta in rich burgundy leather.

Wear now with 50s style skirts or over your winter coat come the colder season. The gold tone hardware and equestrian inspired design set off a plain ensemble or understated coat.
A favourite of mine is this skinny, nude number from Miu Miu. Covered in gold-tone studs, it would be perfect to nip in the waist of an evening cocktail dress.

For a more playful look, contrast a simple, understated dress with this tropical print skinny belt by Proenza Schouler.

But to capture the full blown glamour of the nipped in waist, it has to be this velvet and chain belt from McQ by Alexander McQueen.

To create the most elongated hour-glass look, wear this over figure hugging block black, or alternatively, draw attention to the smallest part of your waist by pairing over print.
Whichever you choose, make sure to cinch it in tight and give yourself a silhouette that Sophia Loren would be proud of!

Cropped Tops: Do You Dare to Bare?

While, up to now, cropped tops have largely been the preserve of the very young, very toned or very brave, this season they are going fashion mainstream! Whether in prints, pastels or monochrome the bra top featured heavily in the spring/summer collections of scores of the top fashion houses, including Miu Miu, Dolce & Gabbana, Nina Ricci, Helmut Lang, Prada and Viktor & Rolf.
The easiest and most flattering way to wear the style has to be paired with a full, high-waisted skirt, baring just a flirty flash of skin on the upper midriff. Arguably the most forgiving area of midriff to display for most of us mere mortals.

Keep the look simple and understated in a monochrome palette as seen at Donna Karan Collection. The tribal print and accessories ensure that the retro inspired silhouette stays fresh and interesting.

For those who feel more bold (or more toned) this evening, bandeau style in complementary cherry red and burgundy from Prada, may be for you. The subtle ruching lends a grown up edge to the youthful cut.
Alternatively, pair with trousers and wear under sheer summer layers and soft tailoring for demure chic a la Helmut Lang, seen below.

The asymmetrical cut and sports luxe twist make this an ideal understated undergarment for bold, sheer styles. And if, like me, you are starting to plan your crop-top-ready sit up regime, at least you need look no further for on trend workout wear!

Fur sleeves: New Autumn Trend

Looking at pictures of the AW11, I noticed a certain fil rouge among the various catwalks: fur sleeves.
they might not be the most comfortable accessory present in the fashion scene but they are surely making a statement.
They screem look at me!

I am wondering if  they are going to be a big trend off the catwalks. I like the idea of accessorising a simple dress with gorgeous furry sleeves but do you really want to go around the centre of town with bare arms and furry sleeves?

It's ok, I think, when you are going to a party as they keep you warm and you look stylish. I guess I will keep them for my special occasions and when I want to feel  über cool.

Cross body bags

I always wondered why fashion is sometimes so uncomfortable. As Coco Chanel once said: "Luxury needs to be comfortable, otherwise is not luxury".  I guess that's what Miu Miu was thinking when they designed this eye candy.

The cross body bag allows me to go shopping and run between meetings with my hands completely free. With its detachable shoulder strap I can wear it across the body and completely multi-task: one hand is on my phone, the other is holding my diary or some shopping. The bag, simultaneosuly, adhorns the left side of my body. Divine.

The red padded leather is very eye-catching which really complements the more vibrant colours I am using during the summer. The only down-side is that it costs 1000 pounds...
but look at the inside of the bag:

It's roomy without being too big, it allows me to separate the objects I need to carry in 3 different compartments. Can I say to myself that I will use it forever and just buy it?
